We’re setting sail
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and German Unity 1990 – 2024
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was formed in 1945. In 1947, it was renamed “Mecklenburg” and in 1952, was divided into three GDR districts (Schwerin, Rostock and Neubrandenburg). After reunification in 1990, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was re-constituted as a new state, with a territory largely corresponding to its 1952 boundaries.
1990
German reunification took place on 3 October 1990, less than a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989.
3 – 7 – 3: nowhere else offers more.
With three national parks, seven nature reserves and three biosphere reserves, MV is a treasure trove of nature in the north of Germany.
26 October 1990
The democratically elected state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was constituted in Schwerin Castle just 23 days after reunification.
1.6 million
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern boasts a spacious environment, with a population of around 1.6 million, the lowest density in Germany. We have 70 inhabitants per square kilometre, compared to 221 in Saxony and 532 in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Mäkelborg-Vörpommern
This is the Low German name for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The abbreviation “Meck-Pomm” is also very popular. Many people who live here just call it “MV”.
14.652
Renewable energy sources generated a total of 14,652 gigawatt hours of gross electricity in 2021. Renewable energy thus accounted for 77.8 percent of the electricity generated in MV – approximately twice the national average of 39.8 percent.
